Andy Jack Peter Jack on fly

April 4 2009

...Andy figured (see report from 03/30/09) that he hadn't had enough punishment from the Spinner Sharks so decided to turn his sights on the Jumbo Jack Crevalles that cruise our area this time of the year. To share in the pain his friend Peter joined us. Andy and Peter are very accomplished fresh water fly fisherman from New York who love to tangle with salt water fish on fly when they get the opportunity. Fly fishing in salt water is not always as refined as the fresh water stuff but you definitely get to see your backing a whole lot more. Just so that it wasn't too easy the wind figured it would blow nice and hard from the North and the fish decided they really weren't going to be too sociable. Andy and Peter could have whimped out and said it was too rough and cold but much too my surprise and delight they said they wanted to tough it out. These gentlemen are in their 60's and 70's, I've had a lot younger guys whining about getting a little wet & cold, not these guys, honestly my hat off to them, their enthusiasm and love for fly fishing is inspirational, true gentlemen on the water. Finally we found the water temperature break and started seeing fish. The wind was still strong and conditions really tough for fly fishing but Andy and Peter prevailed. Andy got a Jack well into the 30 lb range and Peter landed a respectable Jack on a lighter weight rod making the fight that much more challenging. There were a bunch more bites, hookups and near misses to keep things interesting all day. We found some Blue Fish tight to the beach and put a hurting on them going through a bunch of flies in no time, good way to clean out the fly box. Considering this was their first trip fishing for the Jacks and taking into account the horrible fly fishing conditions, Andy and Peter gave a good accounting of themselves, I'm sure they will be back to take on these fish again.
