... The mission today was going Permit Fish'in. Greg is an accomplished offshore fisherman who has caught just about everything that swims, however had not yet caught a Permit. Permit fishing is best once the sun gets a little higher in the sky so we spent the early part of the morning looking for Tarpon. We did find a few nice size fish but no hookups. Always nice when your Tarpon baits get eaten by Catfish (note to be read with just a hint of sarcasm). Unfortunately by the time the sun was up high so was the wind. Conditions weren't ideal but we were determined to get Greg his first Permit. The Permit bite has been very consistent the last two months, except of course today. Wind, clouds, a little rain and murky water made it a challenging day. First fish up to the boat, besides the earlier mentioned Catfish of course, was a mid sized Cobia. As we were about to begin wrangling it into the boat it coughed up the crab and made a quick getaway, hence no photo. We even had a Sailfish swim under the boat. Although crabs are not on a Sailfish's menu we launched a few at it none the less, needless to say with no success. Finally the guest of honor decided to show and a hefty fellow at that. After much grunting, groaning, perspiring and forearm burning Greg had the fish up to the boat. It weighed 38 lbs. Not bad for an angler's first Permit, Greg should probably retire from Permit fishing at this stage cause it's pretty much down hill from here. We rounded out the day with a few Snook on the way back to the dock. Although it was a tough day on the water persistence paid off and Greg's mission of catching his first Permit was accomplished.
