... Lin & Ollie fished with me for two weekends. Lin & Ollie are brothers. Lin still living in South Africa and Ollie living in the US. Great to have them together on the boat fishing, just like when they were young boys growing up in South Africa. As we all get older we realize how special time with family & friends is and how we need to cherish every moment together ... unfortunately the fish & weather are not as sentimental. The first weekend they fished with me Hurricane Bill had just passed by and the second weekend tropical storm Danny passed by. Although we didn’t get any direct impact from the storms it was enough to kick up the swell on what should have been excellent end of summer fishing. Things were off just a little in the ocean. Lin really wanted to get a Tarpon, although our Tarpon season is pretty much done up here and we didn’t expect the Tarpon fishing to be consistent we gave it a shot anyway. We managed to see a few decent sized Tarpon, have one nice Tarpon blow a mullet out the water and land two small fish. The Keys offer more opportunities for Tarpon this time of year. Lin & Ollie went to the Keys during the week and fishing with Mark Krowka out of Islamorada did get two solid 50 to 60 lb fish and a handful more hook ups. Although Tarpon are not prime time in my area this time of year there is still a good variety of other fish to stretch the line. The sharks were really out these two weekends and we seemed to catch one pretty much everywhere we went. One nice Blacktip in the 70 lb class to the boat, a few more in the 80 lb class jumped, a bunch of smaller blacktips and a really cute tiny Bull Shark rounded out the shark count. As small as the Bull Shark was he was fully equipped with all the attitude of a mature Bull, hissing and gnashing his teeth ... I might be small but just get those fingers a little closer!! Lin has done a lot of fresh water but not much salt water fly fishing. With a livewell full of “motivation & encouragement” i.e. live chum, Lin landed a few Spanish Mackerel, big Blue Runners and a nice Bonito, all his first on fly. The Permit gave us the slip with two bites and a solid hookup followed by a disappointing break-off on structure. Cudas and Bonitos were where they usually are in summertime however they too were not as plentiful as they should have been. Snook fishing was a little off too. None the less Lin & Ollie did land a number of Snook with a nice surprise Redfish caught by Ollie. So all in all a good number and variety of fish were caught on fly & bait over the two weekends. Most of all two brothers got to enjoy each other’s company doing what they both so love to do, fishing, what could be better?
