... Today was a fly fishing only day with Erick from Luxembourg. Erick loves to pull on the Albies (False Albacore / Bonitos / Speeding Bullets / Knuckle busters...) so the target was of course Albies. Summertime is the perfect time for Albies and there definitely is no shortage of these fish right now. Chum baits are also plentiful so all the ingredients are there, just need the weather to co-operate and you are in for a really fun day. First thing in the morning we went looking for Tarpon, saw a few fish but no real opportunities materialized. We did have a micro Snook hit the fly, very small fish but a fish none the less and a good way to get the stink out the boat early on. As the sun got up a little we loaded up on chum baits and headed offshore. The first decent spot produced some nice size Spanish Mackerel. Heading further offshore we got into the Albies and it was non stop action. Chumming the fish to the surface is awesome as you see the action before you feel the line tighten and the drag starts to sing. Erick ties all his own flies so it was also a great opportunity to try the different flies and see what works and what doesn't, pretty much everything he selected worked well. Most of the day we fished the Albies in deeper water (100 ft +) and so they tend to head down once you hook them, there are some big sharks and porpoises around so getting the fish to the boat quickly is the name of the game, else the Tax Man will take his share. On the way back in we stopped on some structure in about 15 feet of water that was holding Albies & Spanish Mackerel. The fish can't go deep so they head for the horizon running just under the surface which makes for some spectacular runs with much hissing of fly line and backing being pulled off the reel. Erick caught the biggest fish in this shallow water on his 9 wt, what a blast that was, testing his tackle, rigging, reflexes and endurance. All in all must have gotten at least 30 Albies to about 16 lbs, 15 Spanish Macks to about 7 lbs, the small Snook mentioned earlier and about 20 of the biggest badest monster Blue Runners you have ever seen. A very busy day catching fish on fly was had, I'm sure Erick slept well that night.
