Josh Shark Fly Josh and Dad Jack Double Josh Jack Fly Josh Shark Fin Grab

... This time of year is all about getting the right conditions. If the ocean allows you to get out, the swell is down and you can fish close to the beach then you are pretty much assured (as sure a you can be in fishing) that it's going to be game on. For the wind "West is best" and that is what we had today. We'd have liked a little less cloud cover but I'll take the calm seas and cloudy skies over clear skies and strong east winds. Within 2 minutes of stopping on the first spot Josh hooked a really nice 130 lb class Spinner Shark on fly. After some awesome jumps, and a runs well into the bottom half of the backing this really nice shark was brought boat side, the fly remove and released. A textbook bite, fight, landing and release. The rest of the day was a little more text book and then a bit of comic book. Just when you think you have these fish figured out you'll get a bunch of bites, a bunch of solid hooks ups and a bunch of good runs but nothing to the boat. About mid morning we noticed a nice size school of Jacks pushing in the distance so we decided to change things up a little and pursue them. We were fishing on the very southern end of the region for the Jacks this time of year so these were not the grand daddies that we target a little further north but they were fun on fly and light tackle none the less. After about six or seven of these Jacks it was back to Shark fishing. By the time we packed it in for the day the count was 4 nice sharks to the boat on fly, seven more hooked on fly, 4 to the boat on bait and six or seven Jacks. Catching these fish on fly is truly a blast however bait fishing is just as exciting and rewarding. Now is the time to do this. The shark action will only be around until about mid April and the Jacks around till mid May. The Cobia are beginning to show on the beaches so the potential for a spectacular day fly, artificial or bait fishing is very high this time of the year if you get some good weather.
