... Today was just the wife and I going out for a relaxing day on the water, so we started by getting up at 4.00 am to see if we could catch some Goggle Eyes. We only got a few Goggle Eyes but got a ton of small Blue Runners. It was off to the Amberjack spot to start the year off right by getting in a good workout. Typically over the winter season we manage to get a few African Pompano so Sherry had been saying how she’d like to catch her first African Pompano. She had not caught an Amberjack yet either so I explained to her that the Amberjack shouldn’t be an issue but the African Pompano would be a long shot. The first fish she catches, of course, is an African Pompano. Then we could not buy an Amberjack. We fished pretty hard and finally managed to catch one little guy. We were marking good fish but I think they just had full-moonitis. The weather was still nice and calm so we headed up the beach looking for Spanish Mackerel & Bluefish. En route conversation was about how Sherry had not caught a Spinner Shark yet either. I explained to her that it was just a little early for the Spinners and that in about another 3 weeks they should be in pretty good. In the next hour Sherry proceeded to land two Spinner Sharks, have one break off and two more bites. A bunch of Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish on fly rounded out the day. Sherry caught three firsts today and we were home by 1.30 pm. The most satisfying part of the day for me as a Guide was how things went exactly as I had said they would.
