...Last year May 24th to 28th a group from Europe was here to fish for 5 days. This year another group from Europe was here, same organizer and format but different anglers, Jean-Pierre, Claude and Marco. Same as last year the anglers were to rotate between Capt. Scott Hamilton (offshore) and myself (in / near shore) for the week. Last year the weather was decent, this year, not so much. And yes I am about to whine about the weather ... it's the beginning of June and we should have at least half decent winds by now. Even for Capt. Scott Hamilton who fishes out of a 26 foot catamaran it was very rough. The winds were pretty much 15 to 20 mph the whole week. For me it meant definitely confined to fishing inside the whole time. Capt. Scott Hamilton made it out two days with his anglers and got two 40+ lb Dolphin on fly, a few more decent size Dolphin, some nice sized Albies, Jack Crevalles and Kingfish. Rough conditions in the ocean make fly fishing very challenging so the guys did great to get the fish they did. Being confined to inside limited my guys to target Snook, Tarpon and pretty much anything else we could get to bite. Well to say the least fishing was extremely tough fishing, it was as if the fish on the inside had all vacated the area. We fished really hard to get the few fish we did. We did have some noteworthy catches but overall the wind really killed this week from being spectacular. Jean-Pierre was the fly fisherman of the group. Stuart was where we fished. He started the trip out with getting two jumps out of a nice 75 lb Tarpon on fly. For the rest of the time the fly thing on the inside just wasn't happening, we really struggled to only get some smaller hardly worth mentioning Ladyfish, Snappers, small Snook, Jack etc. I talked Jean Pierre into using bait a few times which paid off nicely with some good Snook, one was a 37 and half inch stud. Jean-Pierre was also the one who got the 40 lb Dolphin offshore, so he definitely had the big fish mojo of the group. Claude and Marco were the bait fisherman of the group, we fished in the Palm Beach inlet area. Although we had awesome live bait it just didn't really happen for them, the inlet was too rough to fish in and the usual suspects in the area just seemed to have vacated inlet area. They ended up with Barracudas, monster Needlefish some Snook and a few small Jacks. Not spectacular fishing but considering the circumstances at least we got something to stretch the line. If we could only have gotten into the ocean things would have been significantly different. Unfortunately we can't control the weather so we made the best of what we had. The group had a great time in spite of the strong winds, hopefully they'll return again next year and bring some calm winds with them and really tear it up.
