... Today was Labor Day and I got to spend it with family on the boat. Sherry and Ollie were out with me just to see what we could see, no real agenda ... that's what I told them however, I had a plan. Seeing that it was Labor Day I figured I'd see if I could get them to do a little hard labor i.e. pull on some Amberjacks. Sherry had not caught a big Amberjack yet so she was pretty eager to see what this AJ fishing was all about, she was up first. Dropping the first bait down I handed her the big stick (also referred to by some of my customers as "the stick of pain" ). When the first fish hit Sherry about had a heart attack, it was a nice sized fish and the fight was on. We fish these AJ's with a ton of drag to keep them out of the structure so it's pretty much a tug of war from start to finish. The fight isn't very long but it is pretty intense. Not long into the fight and Sherry was calling for help. I helped with holding the rod and she kept cranking. Soon Team Hall had a nice AJ to the boat and Sherry got her picture with this nice Reef Donkey before it was released. As soon as the AJ was released Sherry announced her temporary retirement from fishing for the day. So Ollie was up, he had some bad luck with having two nice bites but the circle hook just not finding its mark. Finally he did get an AJ to the boat but it was a wee little fellow compared to Sherry's. I even got into the action and was allowed to pull in a medium sized AJ. With our big baits used up we moved on looking for some more relaxing fishing. Armed with a bunch of pilchards we hit the reef edge and were rewarded with two decent sized Dolphin, as few small Kings and a bunch of Bonitos. With some storms brewing we called it quits and headed home. A great way to spend Labor Day and I'm sure Sherry is going to remember her labor this day for quite some time.
